Ingredients
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
- For the Glaze:
- 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
- 3–4 tablespoons milk (or heavy cream)
- Purple, green, and yellow (gold) gel food coloring
Instructions
- Step 1: Cream Butter and Sugars. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper. In a large bowl, cream softened unsalted butter with granulated and brown sugars until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
- Step 2: Add Wet and Dry Ingredients. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until just combined. In a separate bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet, mixing on low speed until just combined, being careful not to overmix.
- Step 3: Chill, Shape, and Bake. Cover dough and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes. Scoop rounded tablespoons of dough, roll into balls, and place 2 inches apart on prepared baking sheets. Bake 8-10 minutes, until edges are set and lightly golden. Cool on racks completely.
- Step 4: Prepare and Decorate Glaze. Whisk powdered sugar and milk until smooth. Divide into three bowls and color purple, green, and yellow. Once cookies are completely cool, drizzle or spread glazes over them in festive stripes. Allow glaze to set before serving.
