Ingredients
- 1 lb (450g) ground beef (80/20 recommended)
- 1/2 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
- 1 tbsp olive oil or butter
- 4–8 tbsp pizza sauce, divided
- 1 cup shredded low-moisture part-skim mozzarella cheese
- 1/2 cup shredded provolone cheese (optional)
- 1/4 cup pepperoni slices, thinly sliced mushrooms, bell peppers, or black olives (your choice of toppings)
- 4 burger buns (brioche or sesame seed recommended), toasted
Instructions
- In a large bowl, gently combine ground beef with garlic powder, oregano, salt, and pepper. Form into four 1/2 to 3/4-inch thick patties, making a small indentation in the center of each.
- Heat olive oil or butter in a cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 3-5 minutes per side, or until desired doneness and a nice crust forms. Remove and tent with foil.
- Lightly toast burger buns. Spread 1-2 tablespoons of pizza sauce on the bottom half of each bun. Place a cooked burger patty on top. Spoon another tablespoon of pizza sauce over each patty.
- Return skillet to medium-low heat. Place sauced patties (without top buns) in the skillet. Top generously with mozzarella and provolone cheeses, then your chosen toppings.
- Cover the skillet with a lid or foil. Cook for 2-4 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly and toppings are warmed through.
- Carefully transfer pizza burgers to the toasted top buns and serve immediately.
